The rental car companies have other airport related daily fees. Don't rent long term from the airport. Instead rent from a non airport location that isn't in a county with a major sports arena/stadium. Take an Uber/Lyft, cab to that county. This isn't convenient, and non airport rental car offices often have hours that aren't anywhere close to ...

I booked a car a month in advanced with a sale, and then a week before I went, they had a 80-90% sale, so I cancelled my previous one (no fee) and rebooked a new car 3 days before I left. So for safety, best to book a month or so ahead but Lotte offers free cancellation so you can shop around for cheaper options nearing the time.

I used to exclusively rent a car driving cross country (1 month ~ 6000 miles). It was totally affordable and worth it to pay $600 for a minivan and put those miles in a their car. Now, minivans are $800/ week and I’d select to drive my van.

Unless you have something specific you want to do along the way - like going to the Emerald Coast beaches (from Gulf Shores, Alabama, to Apalachicola, Florida) or New Orleans - a one-way rental is significantly more expensive than returning the car to where you rented it, and if there are only two of you, it would probably be cheaper to fly (and much, much faster).

Best thing you can do to make your car pick-up easy with any of these agencies is: 1 - Fill out their rapid-pick-up program info. 2 - Make your reservation at least 24h prior to pick-up. (This allows them to create your rental profile and pre-pull your car.) That's ^ how you skip the line.

Car rentals are expensive across the board right now due to limited availability. That said, try Enterprise and off airport locations. Autoslash is also great and saves you time looking for deals and coupons.

TLDR: despite initial challenges, renting a car in Japan significantly added to the sites we could visit and cut wasted time. I just returned from Japan and wish to share my car rental experience. I was hesitant to rent a car in Japan because, as an American, I don't have experience driving on the left side of narrow roads.

I always make a video walking around any rental car I rent as soon as they hand me the keys. I'm a fastbreak member, so check-in is expedited. They just handed me the keys and pointed me in the direction of the car. I noticed a scratch on the bumper during my walk around.

  11. What would be more cost effective renting a car or Uber?

Rent a car. Uber is priced quite a bit higher since the pandemic. But rental cars have been quite a bit cheaper. I rented a car because I was getting body work done a few months ago, and it was $10/day on Hotwire. It was a Nissan Rogue a nice smaller suv (although I chose the cheapest economy car in my booking).
