Hawaii has season, and January is winter. It tends to be cooler, cloudier, and rainier than other times of the year. Waikiki will have more sun and less rain, while the North ashore will have more. Sometimes it is passing rain and sometimes it rains all day. This past winter was unusually wet and one people were disappointed by the weather.
This upcoming January will be our 10th trip to Hawaii, and 9 out of 10 times it has been beautiful the entire time. One time we had 2 straight days of rain, but it was warm. Last year, was windy, with Kona winds (VOG), not trade winds. Beach time for tanning can be guaranteed!

21 helpful votes. 1. Re: Hawaii in January. 15 years ago. January this year wasn't bad. Yes, you get more rain showers during the winter, and you may even get some all-rainy days. You'll want to stay on the south side of any island, as the northern swells will prohibit swimming on the north side.
The average high temps in January at the beach level is about 80-81 F, and lows 65-68 F. The temps drop about 3 degrees for every 1000 feet of elevation, so at the top of Haleakela at 10,000 feet on Maui, it will be 30 degrees colder.
January is winter in Hawaii when the islands typically get more rain…but Waikiki & Honolulu are on the southern shore, which is generally drier. North-shores will be wetter with BIG surf. :) No sure about the El Niño effect - I am sure some locals will chime in. Edited: 2:12 pm, October 23, 2023
