3. Re: Car Rental. Feb 4, 2024, 9:53 AM. “North Austin ” is a huge area. That could mean the north side of Austin proper, or one of the many suburbs like Pflugerville, around Rock, Georgetown, Leander, etc etc etc. it’s mostly massive suburbia but there are also some sketchy, high crime areas.
That said, Austin has one of the higher array of added fees and taxes on airport car rental. So you at least will know the difference, you can price your rental for airport pickup and for pickup elsewhere. This is a problem in other places, and local government is learning to extend the taxes and fees to every rental in their city as people ...
The car rental prices at the airport are really expensive for the week we are there. However, it looks like I can get a car from the Budget or Avis downtown, on North I-35, then return to the airport before our flight for 1/3 of the cost. I was thinking we could stay at the airport and get the hotel shuttle on Saturday night when we arrive.
