The rental agreement you sign is a third contract. It is between you and the rental car company and may require many things that neither your auto insurance nor credit card cover. Loss of use is often included in the rental contract and this is generally not covered in your auto or credit card coverage.

Looks like they have two tiers of coverage. Most cards are in Tier 1 and offer coverage for cars with a new retail price up to $50,000. Tier 2 seems to only apply to Platinum and Centurion cards and covers up to $75,000. One big advantage of Amex is that they do not allow Dynamic Currency Conversion.

Re: proving CDW/LDW coverage for rental car with Amex. 11 years ago. Call AMEX, they will give you info and can sign you up for the program. When signing up you can request they mail you the insurance information. Take this with you. I've rented numerous times and none of the companies I've used have asked for proof.
