We are planning to rent a car, but it seems that all of the major car rental rental companies are charging an additional rate (minimum $250) because the pick-up and drop-off locations are different. For the 2 weeks we'll be there, the rental rate seem to average between $1000 to $1200. This is quite a steep price tag from my perspective.
Two days later, I picked up a Hertz rental with unlimited mileage and drove it in three states - and Hertz did not care at all. That's why I don't consider them in the same category. Enterprise/Zipcar started by focusing on local, short-term rentals and Hertz/Avis (their parent companies) had a different business model.

If you're doing a one-way rental (e.g., drive down and fly back), there will be a substantial one-way drop fee. Returning a car to the location you rented it from won't have that one-way fee. I recently have been looking for a rental with unlimited miles myself. Some car rentals like avis and budget advertise unlimited miles, but read the fine print. They often limit the so called "unlimited miles" to only a handful of states, with a 25 - 35 cent/mile surcharge for any miles outside of those states.
Total price with Enterprise through Costco with no restrictions, unlimited mileage is $196. Obviously, any agency builds in a one-way or "drop fee" and it is never disclosed as such. The rates may also vary daily due to supply and demand. Report inappropriate content.
Read the fine print. "Unlimited" on most agreements say within the state you rented and contiguous states only (those states connected to it). If the rental company finds out you went further or checks the cars GPS, you will be charged so many cents per mile that you went out of that area, which will add up very quickly.
