Re: Hwy 36. 18 years ago. US 36 is a very good road through Missouri (lots of 4 lane stretches) and most of Kansas. In Western Kansas, the route becomes less heavily traveled. Around the Norton area, there is a route which cuts South to I-70. I would recommend making the cut. fyi- I-70 through Missouri is a real pain.

Salina has many more options for food and lodging. Both cities have a lot to do, though Old Abilene town is far down my picks.
1. Re: Best Route from Kansas City to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. Yes, the bridge is open so there's no reason to avoid Memphis. Google Maps will tell you to go to Memphis, then I-22 to Tupelo and then Hwy 45 all the way down to Mobile. The problem is Hwy 45 goes from decent 4 lane down to cruddy two lane once you cross the border in to Alabama.
