    We use Google maps for city driving. But we love MSN's Maps Line Drive for instructions between cities. It cuts down the map to just the lines you need to see to get you there.

    Google Map France can also be downloaded for offline use. You just won't get live traffic. Map use doesn't consume a ton of data anyway. I have an old but still kicking Garmin as well. I still use it when I drive in foreign countries. I then use Google Map as a back-up, primarily for searches.
