    I'd keep an eye on the BC Ferries website for current conditions (delays, waits, dead ferries, etc.). You can make the decision on which ferry to take when you get to the north end of Nanaimo . I think it's going to take a lot longer than 40 minutes t get from Tsawwassen to the airport at 5pm on a weekday, even if you can use the HOV lane.
