So, theoretically, yes, I suppose you could walk 1 mile from the subway and then catch the bus and get a free transfer.

On a regular bus you put the card in the fare reader and it will say "transfer" on the LED. On an SBS bus (like the 34th street bus) you put you card in the machine at the curb at the bus stop and get a paper ticket.
