If you have a local phone or a phone with a UK SIM card then you would dial all the digits listed in the London number and not remove digits as you could in a local US call. A London number starts with 020 xxxx xxxx . You dial all those digits UNLESS you are using an American phone.
2. Re: Dialing a local phone number. 14 years ago. If you are calling from a fixed line phone you omit the area code (in London 020) and dial the 8 digit local number. From a mobile/cell phone dial the full 11 digits. Although even if you do dial your own area code from a fixed line, the call will still go through.
We no longer have a central directory enquiries - it's all private companies that charge a fortune for each enquiry, and they aren't all reliable - I've been given incorrect numbers numerous times. You could try dialling (011 44) 11 88 88 and see if that works, but it will be expensive.
