    As far as I can tell, Waze, Google, Mapquest, and many others have eliminated the ability to map driving directions using the shortest driving miles rather than driving time. Since, I never drive fast and hate patronizing interstates as much as root canal surgery, is there any free way to determine the shortest driving miles for a roadtrip?

    6. Re: Pacific Highway 1 - Google maps. 5 years ago. You can easily add waypoints to force Google maps to take the route you want, although you can only add so many, (ten I believe). Anyway you can type in the city or you can do a map search so you just put the X on Highway one and hit save.

    Google Map France can also be downloaded for offline use. You just won't get live traffic. Map use doesn't consume a ton of data anyway. I have an old but still kicking Garmin as well. I still use it when I drive in foreign countries. I then use Google Map as a back-up, primarily for searches.

    Re: Route Planner. Old school paper maps and atlases are a good place to start in planning a road trip. They help to provide the big picture and show how your destinations relate to each other. Plot your route on a paper map and then put it in to an online program like GoogleMaps for approximate drive times/distances.
