Afternoon - Roosevelt Lodge in Yellowstone to Red Lodge MT (along Beartooth Highway) - Google maps has distance as 96 miles, driving time about 2 hours.

The next decent place to stay would be Polson (264 miles and a little over 4 hour drive). Then Bigfork which is only 38 miles from West Glacier.

If your staying at Canyon you have to add the time for leaving the park so another 1.5 hours. Going to the far side and going over the GTSR is not something I would add to that drive.
