Have been chipping away at the price saving $50 here and there and last week was at $800. Just booked last night for $375 with Thrifty through Discount Hawaii Car Rental.

HawaiiSavers on eBay is the best place I've found for discounted activities on the Big Island including Body Glove snorkel, Island Breeze Luau and ATV tours. Also dining certificates . . . also essentially half price.

   I am using Discount Hawaii Car Rental on the Big Island. Price was really good picking up the car from Thrifty was very quick and effcient. A few years ago on Maui i had the rental company getting the facts wrong about my Rental. When i called the DHCR help line the problem was imediately resolved, great support. I hear lots like Costco too.

You can go to the visitor center driving a regular car, provided your rent-a-car company lets you drive on Saddle Road. You don't need a 4X4 here.
