It's not a matter of paying the rental with debit card, but rather rental agencies usually insists on a credit card for rental. No cash or cash-equivalent deposit is acceptable. You see if the car is wrecked or whatever, they can get still charge you back quite a bit up to credit limit.
Not a reason to forego renting (we are), but in my view, it would be in a big mistake / risk to use a debit card where the money comes directly out of your bank account. Consider getting a credit card for an extra layer of protection. Report inappropriate content. FreeYourMind117.
All reliable rental companies need a credit card in the name of the driver and renter. Maybe you can rent a car without, but then it would be with a local rental company, without insurances. And you would have to give a huge security deposit by cash (a few thousend dollars).

A debit card is not the same thing, and because it works a bit different, may not be accepted in some circumstances. For instance, as mentioned, hotels generally require credit cards. Even with a deposit via debit, they often will only take credit when you arrive because of the need to put a hold on funds.
