You'll purchase liability through your car rental company (that's required), but this AAA insurance may cover the vehicle. The only way to know for sure is to contact Hertz directly though. As Nick has stated, read the terms for the credit card you plan to use. Most cards insist you decline all other insurances but in Italy the price of the rental includes some insurance so you can't decline it, which is why most cards don't cover Italian rentals. Again, read the terms and conditions of the credit card to be certain.

AAA membership is worthwhile if you travel and use hotel discounts and other purchase discounts alone. AAA has different levels. The difference has to do with things like towing distances needed if you car broke down and you needed a tow. I manly drive within 5 miles of where I live. If need a tow I won’t have to pay extra.
