Here's my advice: rent from a national company that you've heard of. I use Avis every time I travel and they are always courteous and prompt, the cars are almost brand new, I've never had mechanical trouble, I've had to extend my rental with no notice and have never had a problem, you get CD players in all cars (some companies just have radios).
Over the course of the trip (almost all highway driving), the actual highway mileage for that particular car was closer to 28 mpg. I don't like being lied to (that is a killer for me doing business with any business again) -- and the Deluxe Rent A Car personnel lied to me twice during that rental process. Deluxe car rental - their motto should be you get what you pay for. Yes price is cheap but service is bad and i felt scammed. beware and read ALL the polices and conditions even the fine print before arriving. oh yeah and bring lots of time and patience because they are not speedy in helping you, even with a reservation
Answer 1 of 7: I planned a trip to So. Cal with my husband and reserved a convertible from Deluxe but when we arrived, there were no convertibles available. We got this junky car with high mileage and the customer service rep wasn't even apologetic.
