It doesn't seem like sound business strategy but I guess they have decided that the revenue that they do get outweighs the negative impact of people who join and are disappointed and post negative reviews on Facebook and other websites.

I'm not sure what resort you are looking at since you posted in Colorado Springs, so I just used Vail as an example of a Vail Resorts owned hill. I suspect you were looking at this pass which isn't valid until Fall of 2019.
