7. Re: Hotwire scam- avoid it!!! 4 years ago. Had a bad experience with Hotwire on Big Island, Hawaii. They understated the cost of a prepaid Thrifty car rental by 15 % (for a 12-day rental), which was the reason I chose them. Then Thrifty charged me that extra 15% ($132) and would not honor the Hotwire commitment.
I'm going down for a week at the end of this month, and I want to get a cheap rental car. I usually use Hertz, but for some reason, their prices are inflated to over $500 for the week! Hotwire has some cheap options, but I don't know which rental car company it will be, and it is non-refundable, so I'm kind of nervous.
Just found out HOTWIRE charged me $212.00 more than the current rate of renting directly from ALAMO Car Rental on my upcoming trip Dec 2013 to Sarasota, Fla. The non refundable , no cancel rate of $438.00 is nearly double the $256 direct rental rate of Alamo. Calls to customer service at Hotwire non productive.
Be careful with Hotwire on rental cars...the car types they show on the website are not what the agency offers locally. We rented a Cadillac ATS or similar for San Jose de Cabo in Mexico on 7/23/15 and the similar was a Nissan Maxima...which I would have been ok with but you can rent a Nissan Maxima or similar at the same location for 1/2 the cost.
For folks out looking for a rental car there check with your Costco, BJ's, or Sam's club to see how the rental car prices compare. For Costco just go to the Costco site and use the travel link. They have partnerships with many of the major car rental companies. We happened to use Alamo both times b/c they were the least expensive with Costco.
