2. Re: Preparing to Avoid Rental Car fees on Tolls. 4 years ago. Hertz charges something like $4.99 per day, once you go through the first toll. What I don’t like about Hertz, they charge you each and every day of the rental, even if you never go through another toll. The max is $24 or so, but it’s just flat out wrong.

I googled the topic and found the relevant page from Ez pass, which says do not enter your rental plate but use your transponder on the rental vehicle and it should charge my Ez pass account.
Answer 1 of 26: Family from England arriving and getting rental car. We will take a road trip in the rental car. It’s silly for them to pay a daily fee for EZ Pass given we will only use toll roads maybe 2 days. I know they can’t get register the rental plates...

My experience, and that of our adult children in the New York area, is that placing the EZ pass on the dashboard gets it read accurately.
