The reviews you saw are probably from supermarket that's pretending to be a part of the cargills chain. Yes, you get quite a few of them, around the country. There's even a 40 foot "Tescos" in Negombo.

2. Re: Cargills Food City. 9 years ago. You should be able to find other alcohol shops - locally called Wine Shops - in the area. I've seen about 4 Cargills stores in the Galle town. Three of them were just blatant ripoffs of the original store. Same signage, colours etc Not sure if this is the case around Hikkaduwa. Report inappropriate content.
If one is serious in shopping it will be a place to spend a few hours. There is an interesting food court with several speciality outlets. Terrace of the food court is a nice area to chill out with a cool breeze in the evening enjoying a meal or a punch. View from the terrace captures the skyline towards the west from Colpetty to Galle face area.
