very nice customer service agent answered and informed me that AA had just issued a travel waiver today, that allowed her to cancel our flights, reinstate our award points.and waive the fees ($350 total fees as we had two separate pnrs, one outbound, one return.)

Some possible answers: --codeshare ( flight operated by another carrier with an AA flight number) --fare basis too low? --the flight is full/mostly full so they won't let you choose a seat in advance.

AA told me to contact Iberia to reissue the ticket. However, since Iberia's customer service has not been great in my experience, I asked the AA representative to contact Iberia on my behalf. She did so, and Iberia reissued the ticket, confirming my reservation on all of my flights (both ways). Shout out to Kasey at AA for being the best!!
