    Providence, our capital, is a pleasant small city w/ some good schools, restaurants and museums. Newport is a lovely island w/ lots of good beaches (one of the best, Sachuest Beach, is in adjoining Middletown). Hotels are $$$$$ in Newport in July / August. Providence is probably cheaper. One could stay outside Newport and drive in.
