So, theoretically, yes, I suppose you could walk 1 mile from the subway and then catch the bus and get a free transfer.

Typically, you have to get a T-Money card and then take it to a convenience store or subway station office along with ID (and show that ID together) to get it registered as a senior card. If you go to the subway station office, they might have a special senior card available for free (no idea, just a guess).
