The reason why many from North America go through the process is because these companies; Lebara, Lyca, and others are significantly cheaper than what their normal carriers charge. If I call France from the USA on my T Mobile phone, the charge is $2 per minute. If I call the USA from France on my Free.fr phone, the call is free.

As noted, the international calls have to be to a landline. This is for calls to my 94 year young mum in Florida who does not have a cell phone nor computer. When doing research, some providers noted that international calls had to be to a cell, not a landline. I believe Lebara permits international calls to a landline.
