We reserved and paid for a 4x4 vehicle from Budget at SJO 8 weeks prior to our vacation. When we arrived, Budget did not have ANY vehicle available. Fortunately, we had reserved a room in San Jose for the night before starting our adventure across the country so it was not a big deal when we were asked to wait until the next day.

Their description of insurance is a little cryptic if you don’t realize that basic 3rd party liability insurance is absolutely required in addition to the rental car cost.

We needed a vehicle to fit 2 adults and our 4 older (taller) teens and luggage. We rented through VAMOS RENT-A-CAR with pick-up/drop-off at the San Jose airport.
Both places will say ICE on it. You can buy your prepaid SIM there. You can buy one for ¢2500 (about $5), ¢5000 ($10), or ¢10,000 ($20). The local call rate is about ¢40 colones a minute, or around 8 cents a minute. The rate to the US is about ¢160/min (about 30 cents).
