I had personal experience finding plenty of shops open. Most major shops/stores will definitely open by 1/2. Beyond Tokyo and Osaka though, expect most city shops to be closed.

Bookstores like Maruzen and Kinokuniya have them, as do stationary stores like Jimukichi. jusco, Saty, Apita, Donquihote...the all in one shopping stop stores, in their stationary section, will some, but they won't be as nice as Maruzen or Kinokuniya.
