There was a time when hiring in Canada and returning in USA (or vice versa) was almost completely impossible with the exception of a few busy routes like between Toronto and Buffalo (to in general enable folk to visit the Niagara Falls). That has changed.

Dropping Canadian rentals in the US is fine, but not all car companies allow it with some stations. I've looked for YYC-SLC one ways before and none of the majors seemed to allow it. Dropping in Las Vegas or Seattle, no problem, but Salt Lake, no. But that's old information, so check. Report inappropriate content.

Yes, it can be difficult (or extremely expensive) to find companies that will allow a rental from Canada to be returned in the US. Start a search to see if you can find a company that will let you make a reservation for your dates.

The Sandman. Every Monday in July will have 2 or 3 ships arriving in port at Canada Place.The only Monday with one ship arriving is July 24th. If you are doing this drive to Whistler on the 24th, you will have to share Canada Place with only 2,400 passengers disembarking in the morning.
