10. Re: Car rental through Costco by non-member. 10 years ago. Costco changed their procedure a couple years ago to require the Costco member number in order to make a reservation. Prior to that, pretty much anyone could book using their codes and the rental companies rarely asked to see the Costco membership card.

But, when they took a closer look at the confirmation, they noted that it states that they need to show a Costco card when picking up the card.

Thankfully I had another reservation just in case with Costco so I wasn't out a car. Lesson learned and only go through Costco's website now which now requires membership to reserve. That way the rental companies don't need to check for membership because it's needed before the booking even gets to them.
Joan - when you get to the part where you have to put your password in, if you haven't already set up an account with Costco Travel, you can do it then (see the link at the left on that page which says, "Create a Costco Travel Account" ) - or choose "Continue without an account' and I think you just need to enter your Costco membership number and your last name.
