She said the default amount of liability insurance that is already included with my rental is 1,000,000 MXN per event (equivalent to ~$58,500 USD at current exchange rates).
Avis -- all in -- with the $5 insurance would only cost me $157 for the same basic car and features. Seems a little too good to be true, so I want to make sure I will really be covered on the 3rd party liability issue once I get there.

Car rental companies only provide the minimum insurance required by law. Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is a fee that is charged to reduce your liability incase of loss or damage to the rental vehicle. If the car is damaged or stolen you will only be liable for a set amount (i.e. $2000) rather than the full value of the car.
Columbus Travel Insurance includes collision damage waiver so you don't have to pay for it separately. I used this last time. I have also found a great Qatar Privilege member discount of 15% which is valid until 1st March- I am not a member and it works!!
