She said the default amount of liability insurance that is already included with my rental is 1,000,000 MXN per event (equivalent to ~$58,500 USD at current exchange rates).
Avis -- all in -- with the $5 insurance would only cost me $157 for the same basic car and features. Seems a little too good to be true, so I want to make sure I will really be covered on the 3rd party liability issue once I get there.

The guys at the counter at the airport location are familiar with the program and will take an imprint of your card and use it if you return the car with any damage. You deal with Amex when you get home.
Columbus Travel Insurance includes collision damage waiver so you don't have to pay for it separately. I used this last time. I have also found a great Qatar Privilege member discount of 15% which is valid until 1st March- I am not a member and it works!!
