    I see when you say smartphone you mean something other than an iPhone (but that's also a smartphone). For Android phones you will need a Google email address to login to Google. And with that you can access the Google Play store to download apps (including buying them where appropriate). Not sure how Windows phone 7/8 works but it must be similar.
