Current average $$ for the one way car rental fee is the $500 range. I have been sat watcing things for a few weeks and hope a great deal, or even a zero one way fee deal comes up. Get another car. * I think Canadians pay that one way drop fee as well, so you have to move pretty far to get those great deals overseas visitors get.
Probably not with that huge of a distance between the location that owns the car and the location where the car will end up. But you can try by using the local country version of the car companies' websites (hertz.co.uk for the UK, for example).
Does anyone have experience or knowledge of any car hire companies with low or no one-way fees for a roughly 10 day rental between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth? I've looked at a few but they have R1000-R1300 drop fees. Rented cars in other countries before that offered free drop off if rented for more than a certain number of days.
