You can use Expedia or other third party sites to compare rates, but then go directly to the rental car company's website to reserve. It's better not to get a third party involved, especially if there are any issues.

    What worked out best for us last year was to keep our original reservation and then a couple of days after we picked up the car, we called Avis and asked how much it would be to extend another day. I think there was a $12 charge for making a change, and a $45 charge for the extra day.
