1. Re: size of day pack. Your pack should be big enough to carry anything you might need on the trail that day. This includes rain gear, extra clothing like gloves, hats, camera, food, water, etc. I personally used a pack with a built in hydration system like a camel back as I found that I drink more when I have the water easier to access.
