There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.
The downloaded maps take up 430 MB of memory. The do not download every point of interest, but will let you find an address, saved location, etc. even if you have no data connection. My phone reports that Google Maps used about 200 MB of data during my trip.
