I’ve found Google Maps to be very reliable in France.The “offline” feature works really well if you don’t have data coverage. I don’t drive in France myself but I spend a lot of time in the passenger seat beside a professional who does, and his go-to app is Google plus a paper Michelin atlas.
There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.
1 year ago. Google maps cannot be downloaded outside of Japan. The reason for not being able to download offline maps of Japan on Google Maps is because Zenrin Co. (a Japanese mapping company) own the rights to the entire Japan cartographic area, and unlike most other countries, won't give it up to Google Maps for offline use.
The noted offline feature is of particular value in destination such as Vietnam. International data plans via ATT no longer function in Vietnam. I use Google Maps extensively for directions -- walking or otherwise. I really wish Google Maps included a low data usage option for international travels.
With Google you'll need to download the maps before leaving home. TomTom has an offline version of their maps. Basically turns your phone into a TomTom standalone GPS. The main gain from having data on your phone is live traffic and routing.
