Hertz only allows it on certain class rentals. National allows it on all rentals. And, because you can choose your own car, you CAN get results in a free upgrade if a larger car is available on the aisle. Bozeman is a very small airport. No garages. No aisles. No choosing your own car.
The consistent advice we always offer on this forum is, if you want a specific category of car, rent that particular category in the first place. Just because somebody else got a free upgrade is no guarantee nor indicator that you will get one on the day.
Last year I rented a standard SUV from Hertz i Los Angeles. I paid (in advance) around 600$ for 15 days. Now....when I arrived at Hertz they did not have a standard SUV with XM radio as we had ordered. I explained that the XM radio was not that important. They offered me an upgrade to a Infiniti FX35 for 180$. I was also offered an Audi Q7 for 260$

With any of the Major Car Rental Companies, the best thing to do is sign up for the Frequent Renter Program, such as Hertz #1 Gold.Basically you do all the "paperwork" in advance at home, and in most locations, bypass the counter and go straight to your vehicle (Electronic Boards show which space it is located at), and then just show your drivers license to the Security Staff at the exit.

For background, I have rented NUMEROUS vehicles..especially from Hertz (actually was a PC member for a long time). I received an email this morning from Hertz, which I have never seen before: "A selection of our best ever Premium Upgrades can be yours for $35* more per day… $25* more per day for Platinum and President’s Circle members".
Look under their Car Rental Section to see if Hertz has any discount codes. I looked on-line for National rental car rates then I plugged in the codes that mousesavers.com provided and ran the on-line again and my rate went down. (I got a mid-size SUV for 3days for $134 - that is the final price including all taxes and fees and $9 per day carseat)
