The company "3" also sell a similar device called a mifi which might also be worth travellers looking at as well.
When I arrived in Las Vegas the sim+587 combo didn't work straight out of the box. Eventually, after almost an hour on the phone with T-Mobile USA, it turned out that something had gone wrong on activation, and it had been set up as a $70 phone plan, with calls and texts as well as data. The plan didn't work on mobile wifi devices.
Re #13: I have an unlocked phone, and about 18 months ago I stopped into a 3 shop after arriving in the UK and got a good deal on a SIM card for it. I was very happy with the voice/text/data service - but it didn't allow me to use the phone as a mobile hotspot.
