The most direct route from Chi-town to Dayton is I-65 south to I-70 eastbound connecting in Indianapolis, about 300 miles, 4,5 hours, 6 with rest stops - easy drive. If you have young children, the Children's Museum in Indy is the best in the country, particularly the Carousel.
