   After a few decompression days in Auckland, I will be renting a car for the driving portion of the trip. Is google maps a reliable source for roads or is there something better. Therefore the drive time will vary based on time of day (i.e. commute traffic vs. off hours), any accidents, etc. We live close to Silicon Valley and no one uses MapQuest here anymore.

   There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.
