Re: Hwy 36. 18 years ago. US 36 is a very good road through Missouri (lots of 4 lane stretches) and most of Kansas. In Western Kansas, the route becomes less heavily traveled. Around the Norton area, there is a route which cuts South to I-70. I would recommend making the cut. fyi- I-70 through Missouri is a real pain.
If you are into Roadside Attractions, you almost have to seek out the World's Largest Ball of Twine in Cawker City, KS. Three hours east of Goodland and the World's Largest Easel, the World's Largest Ball of Sisal Twine was out second stop as we were traveling across Kansas. The Ball of Twine is easily accessible as you drive through Cawker City.

Route 54 is a great road with character and pretty scenery. There is s lot of wide open spaces but enough small towns here and there if you plan ahead as far as gas goes. This is a road where you will see real America, not just the franchise chains and the freeway. I drive 54 from eastern Kansas to NM once or twice a year and look forward to it.
