We just returned from CR, using an iphone 5 (and having purchased an international data package). First, the apple maps are worthless -- don't even bother with them. Second, while the google maps are accurate, there is no turn by turn direction -- and you need to manually refresh your location to follow complicated directions.

If you have an iPad or Android phone you can install the Tripadvisor app and see your saved location displayed on a more useful map than in Saved trips but it is still not the same as a Google saved map.
