Then when I need more data to continue the trip, I can just download more maps (trace the itinerary, etc.) while in Italy.

If you have an iPad or Android phone you can install the Tripadvisor app and see your saved location displayed on a more useful map than in Saved trips but it is still not the same as a Google saved map. Report inappropriate content.
I’ve found Google Maps to be very reliable in France.The “offline” feature works really well if you don’t have data coverage. I don’t drive in France myself but I spend a lot of time in the passenger seat beside a professional who does, and his go-to app is Google plus a paper Michelin atlas.

5. Re: GPS vs Google Maps on iPhone. 11 years ago. I find the opposite in Italy, the gps took us down obscure lanes, told us to go the wrong way down one way streets. Also when you miss a turn on the GPS, it just tells you to go back while google maps almost immediately recalculates a new route.
