4. Re: Cheapest supermarket chains. 11 years ago. IMHO, VONS (a Safeway company) and Ralphs are the most expensive in SoCal for Main Stream. Albertsons can be a bit less. Gelson's and Whole Foods are the most expensive, IMHO. If you want a Healthy Grocery Store, check out Sprouts Farmers Market in Southern California.
There's also a 7-11 which is a 24-hour 'convenience store' aka 'mini market'. You can't buy meat there or much in the way of frozen food or produce but they do have the essentials: water, juice, soda, snacks, milk, toothpaste, newspapers, razor blades, magazines, some fruit (bananas, for example).
