Hi Amber, We need a valid credit card to reserve a room. The name on the card must match the photo identification at check in. However, you can pay with a Visa gift card upon arrival at the hotel or at check out, but know the credit card with your name on it will be authorized for your stay if you choose to pay at check out.
When I tried to use the card from here on the Internet to book admissions to art museums in Paris, the charge was rejected. I was informed by VISA that the restriction on the use of USA-based VISA gift cards overseas was related to US government concerns about undocumented transfers of funds from the US to terrorists overseas.
2. Re: Using giftcards. Hi msgelfin, Yes you can buy a visa gift card from a financial institution in U.S. and it can be used in Turkey at those retailers that accept "Visa Debit Cards". For example Migros stores accept debit cards in Turkey. Just make sure that your gift card is good for international transactions and is not valid only in US.
I also *think* that VISA gift cards may need to be run as debit or credit depending on the card. Not all merchants may be able to do both. As suggested a standard credit card is your best bet. Merchant fees are pretty high in CR and definitely impact the bottom line of smaller businesses. 3.
3. Re: Pre-paid VISA or MC gift cards - ATM. 14 years ago. I use $500.00 Visa gift cards while there. That way they are not linked to my home account. They do not require a PIN. I have never tried them at ATMs, however. Maybe I will give it a shot in May, but I think it would be a PIN-required type thing.

Have him activate it before he leaves and test it with a small ATM withdrawal. When he gets to Japan, he can try it out with a small ATM withdrawal to be sure it works.
