    The scenery in that part of Minnesota is amazing. In addition, the Gunflint Trail starts in Grand Marais and you can access several lakes in the Boundary Waters from that road. Also, you could add an extra day in the Apostle Islands and Bayfield if you bite the bullet and drive 3 extra hours home on day 9.

    Re: Hwy 36. 18 years ago. US 36 is a very good road through Missouri (lots of 4 lane stretches) and most of Kansas. In Western Kansas, the route becomes less heavily traveled. Around the Norton area, there is a route which cuts South to I-70. I would recommend making the cut. fyi- I-70 through Missouri is a real pain.

It would allow you to visit the South Dakota Black Hills attractions, like Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, Devils Tower, and Deadwood and Sturgis, if you're interested in either or both.
