12 years ago. Almost all retail stores will be closed on Dec 25. On Dec 24th, most big stores will be open very early (some will have been open all night), but will close early for X-mas eve. 6pm is a common time to close on X-mas eve. Dec 26 is a very popular shopping day for after X-mas sales.
Many stores in Chinatown will be open - its not a holiday down there (this is verbatim from my Chinese acupuncturist, most businesses in Chinatown only close for Chinese New Year). Probably the strip of Indian stores in Jackson Heights too.
