We did Tam Quoc in the morning, then Trang An in the afternoon. The scenery is beautiful around Tam Quoc but it's a shorter trip compared with Trang An. Trang An is a longer trip through many caves, so the scenery is different. In some ways I preferred Trang An, as it was just opening up to tourists (we did it in April 2010).
To sum up each in a couple of words: Trang An : 90% Vietnamese tourists, slightly bigger boats, long and small tunnels, 3hr tour. Tam Coc: 90% Foreign tourists, fewer "more natural" tunnels, more open scenery flanked by rice paddies, 1.5 hr tour. Overall it was a great experience and really surreal area. 1. Re: Tam Coc or Trang An Grottoes. 11 years ago. Both are very scenic while Tam Coc is popular with foreigner visitor, Trang An is more popular for Vietnamese. Trang An will be terribly busy from Now til the end of March because it's the time for people going to Bai Dinh pagoda for worshiping. Between the two places, I will choose Trang An.
7 years ago. According to our guide Toan. you need to allow at least 3-3.5 hours for Trang An and Tam Coc is about an hour less than that. Apparently Vietnamese favour Trang An but Tam Coc is more scenic ( FYI we did neither, he took us to another one as we were well short of time)

Go to Hang Mua first (you've already located that on the map), then ride on to Tam Coc (turn right at the end of the Hang Mua track and then right again), and thence to Bich Dong.
