But there was one money exchange stall that was selling a prepaid T-Mobile for $139 USD (outrageous)! So I got out of the airport without a working phone.

If you can live without it till you get someplace with an actual mobile phone service store (AT&T or T-Mobile) you'll have better choices and won't get ripped off. Any place in the airport is a third party and if you search you'll find some negative stories about buying at the airport.
