As I will spend 6 weeks in the UK, I was planning to go to Carphone Warehouse and ask which inexpensive pay-as-you-go phone and plan would be best for my needs (texting and a few calls in the UK ... ability to call the US is a bonus but not required).

We will be traveling to Scotland for 2 weeks with most of our time in highlands: Ballater, Isle of Skye, Loch Lamond area, and Edinburgh. I am thinking it will be too expensive to use our locked iphones or android phones to make local calls to B&Bs, attractions, etc.
